Cycling with Max

21st Jan 2014

Max is an art historian.

He has a special interest in architecture of all periods, but his true passion is the ‘Amsterdam School’ architecture of the 1900s.

On a late summer afternoon, we went on a cycle with Max along the characteristic Amsterdam School buildings. We learned how – over a century ago – an insurgent group of young architects with a vision on functionality and style and an urge to shake up the status quo, came to design the social housing projects that bring in millions of tourist to Amsterdam each year.

13 WOMEN - a timelapse performance film

18th Nov 2013

This is another collaboration piece I made with the performance artist Amanda Coogan, and another exploration into looking at possibilities for capturing durational performance.  13 WOMEN is a new live performance by Amanda in collaboration with thirteen performers, it explores the Church Street disaster of 1913 and its parallel with contemporary Irish society.   This performance took place in the Hugh Lane Gallery over 12 hours.

Cycling with Julie

26th Jun 2013

Julie is a photographer living in Amsterdam. She is Czech, but moved to the Netherlands when she was 10.

We went cycling with Julie on a sunny day and discussed her move to the Netherlands, the differences between her two cultures and her search for the perfect photograph.

You can see some of Julie's work at juliehrudova.com

In other news, we got a nice write up in the Irish Times recently, click here to read.

Cycling with Job

24th Apr 2013

Job Cohen is a Dutch politician.

From 2001 - 2010, he was the mayor of Amsterdam, and its citizens endearingly call him 'Job'. Job became the first public official to wed same-sex couples. Time Magazine awarded him the title "European Hero" in 2005, for his inclusive approach towards ethnic minorities in the city.

Job prefers to cycle to meetings; and we got to cycle along for a while and have a chat with him.

Cycling with Amanda

26th Mar 2013

Amanda Coogan is a performance artist, living in Dublin.

On a windy morning, we went for a cycle with Amanda to Bull Island. We talked about how she grew up as a child of deaf parents, how sign language ultimately influenced her choice to become a performance artist, and where she finds inspiration for her work.

For more on Amanda, visit her website.

The above video has English subtitles available for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, just click the ‘CC’ button on the video player.

Cycling with Ellen

18th Oct 2012

Ellen Rowley is an Architectural Historian who lives with her family in Ballybough, Dublin.

We went for a cycle with Ellen and looked at the architectural heritage around parts of Dublin that often go ignored, the architecture of the 20th Century and her special interest the social housing schemes by the former prolific city architect Herbert Simms.

Ellen recently compiled a book of essays on Irish Architecture "i.e. Patterns of Thought".

Cycling with Ollie

11th Sep 2012

Ollie is originally from Belgium, he moved to Ireland to do a masters in business and eight years later he is still here. Inspired by seeing Reva electric cars on a trip to India he set up the company Greenaer with his Irish wife Lisa. The company started with the electric cars, then included electric bikes and now a line of Dutch and delivery bikes.
We went for a cycle with Ollie and he shared his thoughts on what its like to move to Ireland, business, and cycling!

Two Working Men

12th Aug 2012

A few years ago I made a documentary about the building Liberty Hall. At the time I regretted not being able to include in the documentary the story of Oisín Kelly's sculpture 'Two Working Men'. The sculpture was designed and due to go outside Liberty Hall in Dublin but due to some political interference it ended up outside Cork County Hall where they have since become known as Cha & Miah.

A Camera Obscura on the Liffey Quays

6th Jul 2012

Myself and Michael Ryan made this piece by blacking out the window of a room in my flat and then making a small hole in the blackout, this turned the room into a big camera. We set up a stills camera to take a 4 second exposure every 5 seconds. After we put the stills together into a time lapse video.

The audio was composed by Mike Glennon from The 202s - facebook.com/the202s

Cycling with Ally

29th Jun 2012

This is the next in our 'Cycling with' of videos made by myself and Philip De Roos and edited by Michael Ryan.

A few months back we went for a cycle with Ally. Ally works for Green-Schools, an environmental programme designed to promote sustainability at a young age with kids in schools. Ally's main focus is on increasing cycling numbers among school kids.

Avoid The Thief

14th Apr 2012

With the increase in popularity of cycling in Dublin so apparently is the rise in bike theft. The Dublin City Council, Gardai and the Dublin Cycling Campaign want to tackle this so they hired me to make a video providing information on how people can best lock their bikes.

Cycling Campaign Video Wins Award

10th Dec 2011

The video I made for the Dublin Cycling Campaign won a first place award at the 'Better Together' video awards run by The Wheel. A prize of €3000 was given to the Cycling Campaign at an awards event held in the Convention Centre on December 2nd.

I was really happy with the win obviously for the campaign, I think the video captured the spirit of the 'better together' theme that the compitetion was trying to promote.

Thanks to all involved!

Cycling Campaign Video

26th Jun 2011

Myself and Philip De Roos made this video for the Dublin Cycling Campaign. The Campaign wanted a video they could use for facebook and their website to let people know what they do and encourage them to get involved. The basic information is fairly boring so myself and Philip looked at how we could get it across in a fun way, we decided on getting members of the campaign out to deliver the information in a group and on a bike! I think the video works in the sense that it portrays the Campaign as a fun group of diverse people.

Rebuilding the Republic New Irish Architecture Video

18th Apr 2011

I just finished making a half hour video with Architectural Critic Shane O'Toole. The video is for a retrospective exhibition of Irish Architecture in the M Muesum in Leuven.

A lot of the exhibition panels in the exhibition tend to be heavy with architectural drawings which are not always easily read by non architects, so my intention with the video is that it would act as an introduction to each building and hopefully guide the viewer back to the panels for a closer view.

Slow Architecture Video screening

19th Oct 2010

Myself and filmmaker Adam Bristow have been documenting the progress of the Slow Architecture exhibition as it makes its way on a barge along the Grand Canal. We have put together a selection of the footage which will screen at the Dublin launch of the exhibition at the Waterways Ireland centre on Grand Canal Quay, Friday the October 29th.

You can get more info on the exhibition at:

Yellow Film Project

19th Oct 2010

I just finished filming on a new project with Amanda Coogan. It involved the filming of six different performances, by six different performers of Yellow by Amanda. The performances are four hours each and I will put them all together in the edit so they run side by side similar to the image above. I was free to move around the space with the camera so it makes for a nice contrast of shots placed together.

We (DoCoMoMo) made an observation on the planning application on the proposed Liberty Hall replacment, below is an Irish Times article covering it:

Architectural group claims Liberty Hall is Dublin 'icon'

FRANK McDONALD Environment Editor

LIBERTY HALL in Dublin should be preserved as a “heritage structure of national importance”, according to the Irish branch of an organisation that seeks to protect icons of the modern movement in architecture.
